A new lineage of fresh‐ and brackish‐water mussels (Bivalvia, Mytilidae) from Southeast Asia

چکیده

Three species of mussels collected from fresh- and low salinity (10 psu or lower) brackish-water environments in southern Thailand, Singapore, northern Borneo south Sulawesi formed a new, well-supported distinct mytilid clade based on molecular phylogeny. All are small (< 30 mm) with either radially ribbed smooth shells. Internally, the upper edges ascending lamellae outer inner demibranchs are, respectively, fused to mantle lobes visceral mass. A new genus Parabrachidontes is proposed accommodate three species. Of genus, one described as (Parabrachidontes amnicus sp. n.), other two poorly known (P. leucostictus P. cochinensis) re-described. The closely related Mytella, Perna Arcuatula. Together, they clade, most members which have ctenidial attached and/or These genera clearly phylogenetically clades containing brackish- fresh-water ctenidia free mantle: comprising Limnoperna Sinomytilus (together constituting Limnoperninae), Xenostrobus Vignadula (forming Xenostrobinae). We therefore suggest existence at least lineages mytilids living rivers estuaries East Asia Australasia.

Genetics and taxonomy of Chilean smooth-shelled mussels, Mytilus spp. (Bivalvia: Mytilidae).

It has been previously established that native smooth-shelled mussels in southern South America possess close evolutionary affinities with Northern-Hemisphere Mytilus edulis L. 1758 (McDonald et al. (1991) [5]). This result has since been challenged by authors claiming that Chilean mussels should be considered a local subspecies of M. galloprovincialis Lmk. 1819. Moreover, morphological, physio...

Influence of salinity on the physiological conditions in mussels, Perna perna and Perna viridis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae).

Perna genus was introduced to Venezuela, but nowadays, Perna perna and Perna viridis coexist and are commercially exploited from their natural beds. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of salinity on the physiological conditions of these species by studying RNA/DNA and Protein/DNA ratios. The organisms were collected from natural beds at La Esmeralda, Sucre State, Venezuela, and ac...

Evidence for a Fourteenth mtDNA-Encoded Protein in the Female-Transmitted mtDNA of Marine Mussels (Bivalvia: Mytilidae)

BACKGROUND A novel feature for animal mitochondrial genomes has been recently established: i.e., the presence of additional, lineage-specific, mtDNA-encoded proteins with functional significance. This feature has been observed in freshwater mussels with doubly uniparental inheritance of mtDNA (DUI). The latter unique system of mtDNA transmission, which also exists in some marine mussels and mar...

Symbioses of methanotrophs and deep-sea mussels (Mytilidae: Bathymodiolinae).

The symbioses between invertebrates and chemosynthetic bacteria allow both host and symbiont to colonize and thrive in otherwise inhospitable deep-sea habitats. Given the global distribution of the bathymodioline symbioses, this association is an excellent model for evaluating co-speciation and evolution of symbioses. Thus far, the methanotroph and chemoautotroph endosymbionts of mussels are ti...
